Furniture is a long term asset for a home. Some are even moved on from generation to generation. People spend countless pennies for buying furniture. But what happens once it becomes old and worn off? They just throw it off and go for the next one. But in reality this is not required if little time is spent for its maintenance.Let us observe some ways in which an extended life can be provided to furniture.
For most of us furniture is synonymous with wooden furniture. The main advantage of wooden furniture is it is long lasting and can stand the test of time. Frequent dusting with soft cotton cloth or duster is the best way to keep the furniture clean. Periodic cleaning with warm water and mild detergent is enough to keep it dirt free. Chemical cleaners should be avoided at all cost. Similarly abrasive material should be avoided for cleaning.
If the furniture is left unused for a long time, it is wise to provide a protective cover. But the cover used should be ‘breathable’ i.e properly ventilated that it does not trap humidity. For this same reason, plastic and vinyl covers should be avoided. Even for furniture that is put to regular use, protecting frames like arm, leg etc would be a good option to maintain its longevity.
Prolonged exposure of furniture to sunlight lets it gray fast. For outdoor furniture, it is wise to cover with breathable table cloth.
In case the furniture is subjected to rough use, scratches are likely to occur. In such cases rubbing mildly with sand paper can retain its finish. As far as possible try to avoid dragging objects on the surface of the furniture.
Stains like oil, wine etc can be removed using stain guard products available in the market. It is always desirable to clean the stains then and there itself as it can become stubborn stains if left for longer time.
Opt for removable cushion and sofa covers so that it is easy to wash with mild detergent. The cover should be rinsed thoroughly so as to remove any traces of detergent.
For glass table tops mild detergent or glass cleaners can be used for cleaning. Re-waxing, oiling, polishing etc is recommended to retain the glow of the furniture.
Above all this, careful handling of furniture and use of common sense while putting the furniture to use will go a long way in extending the life of the furniture.
