Dust can be a real pain – even more so when you look around your home and you a crazy amount of it floating around in the air, or lying on that relatively-recently cleaned television unit!
Dust is particularly annoying when you have members of your family who are allergic to dust-mites. If this is the case then there can’t be any resting on your laurels – you need to try and do something about it! Fortunately there are a number of techniques which you can try in order to minimize the build-up of dust in your home.
1) Use Air Purifiers In Your Rooms
Especially so in the rooms of your house which are used the most! Whether it’s the living room, the kitchen or the children’s bedrooms, placing an air purifier in there can prevent dust from settling on surfaces before it gets the chance by sucking it up completely. Fan-powered cleaners work the best here so if you can, make the investment in one of these.
2) Protect Your Bed
This is especially important for those of you (or have family members) which suffer with allergies to dust mites. Thousands of these can settle on your pillows and on your bed sheets, which make it difficult to breathe at night time and can leave you feeling tired when you wake up in the morning due to a lack of sleep. The best way to tackle the problem is to use an allergen-reducing cover on your pillows, as well as your mattress and wash them once every six months.
3) Minimize Your Clutter
Certain items are just prone to collecting dust. Things like metal ornaments, picture frames and display glasses are often seen with a thick layer of dust on them. Worse of all, it’s these fiddly items which are the most difficult when it comes to dusting, so are regularly left untouched due to the fact that we just can’t be bothered. Unfortunately this means that the dust remains in the room, which can cause health issues for those which suffer with allergies. The solution? Don’t bother having things like this lying around in the first place! Or if you do, find a suitable drawer or cupboard for them and only put them on show on special occasions.
4) Don’t Use Cheap Air-Con Filters
Not many homes in the UK have air-conditioning (we would hardly ever need it!), however, those that do may find that dust is even more of a problem for them. This is because certain cheaper filters used on these units are prone to gathering dust and also blasting this around the rest of the room. Instead, make sure you look for higher quality filters, such as pleated ones if you want to save this hassle.
5) Avoid Fabric Softener On Cleaning Cloths
It often feels like the cloths you use to clean dust can just spread it around rather than actually life it from the surface. This problem is made even worse if you use a fabric softener when you wash them – so don’t!
